Know what you eat before you buy it
Scan a product barcode in the store and get an instant verdict: halal, haram or doubtful, with the reason for every ingredient. For Muslims in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Austria.
This website introduces the service and hosts the mosque directory. Product scanning and subscriptions are available exclusively in the HalalFood app on the App Store, coming soon to Google Play. There is no subscription or payment on this website.
Three steps
- 1Scan the barcode
Point the camera at the barcode, or photograph the ingredient list when there is no barcode.
- 2We analyse the ingredients
A rule engine checks every ingredient and E-number, and reads label claims such as "vegetarian" and "halal".
- 3Get the verdict and the reason
A clear verdict with the reasoning and verification sources, plus trusted alternatives when needed.
How do we reach a verdict?
No forbidden or doubtful ingredient, or the source of a doubtful ingredient is proven by the label or a halal certificate.
An ingredient that may be animal or plant-based (such as E471, glycerol or rennet) without a stated source. We look for evidence before deciding, never guess.
Contains a clearly forbidden ingredient: pork or its derivatives, added alcohol, or gelatin from non-halal animals.
Our team reviews products continuously; every research-based resolution is approved manually before publication. Verdicts are guidance — when in doubt, abstain.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scan products on the website?
No. Scanning is available in the app only, because it needs the camera and is tied to your account and daily allowance.
Is the app free?
Yes, it includes a number of free scans every day. An in-app subscription unlocks unlimited scans and is managed entirely by Apple.
What does "doubtful" mean?
The product contains an ingredient that may come from an animal source without a stated origin. We keep verifying it and update the verdict when reliable evidence is found.
When is the Android version coming?
We are working on the Google Play version and will announce it here.
How do I add or correct a mosque?
Email info@madanl.com and we will review it. Mosque data comes from OpenStreetMap.
